The magic of non-touristy places – The Kirkstyle Inn & Rooms review

I really love places in Scotland that are easy to miss or overlook and usually not a place you consider for stopping by.

I realised that when I first heard about Dunning in Perthshire and found out that this village is a true hidden gem.

Dunning is a charming village located among the rolling hills of Perthshire. This place is considered as one of Scotland’s oldest and most historic villages, situated between Auchterarder and Perth.

However, before I tell you everything about a fantastic place in which I have stayed – that is recently founded The Kirkstyle Inn & Rooms – I would like to get you in the mood by introducing Dunning.

Arriving at Dunning

Dunning is one of the most beautiful inland villages in Scotland. This place is a reminder of an ancient settlement located centuries ago on the southern side of Strathearn just in a place where the river valley climbs towards the Ochil Hills.

Interestingly, Dunning lies along the main route between Stirling and Perth. First overlooked by the railway line (1800) and then by the A9 expressway (1900)!

A journey to this place is like a journey through time. You can forget about the present day and indulge in the interesting history and traditions of this beautiful Scottish land.

Despite the fact that the Jacobites destroyed most of the village’s houses, farms and barns in 1716 it is still the centre of the life of the local community and a village full of magnificent historical buildings, just like the Kirtstyle Inn we headed to.

I was brought there due to it’s newly opened luxury rooms and delicious food served by the Kirtstyle Inn.

Our en-suite room

The Kirkstyle Inn Rooms delights right from the entrance. I was captivated by the beauty of the sophisticated interior, full of class and style – Oh, I was astonished.

The bed was extremely comfortable and stylishly combined with antique furniture. I was bewitched by a bathroom with a beautiful free-standing bathtub and lovely aromatic complimentary toiletries. I can’t help but mention how pleasant it was to wake up in the morning and be able to brew coffee in a private espresso machine.

The breakfast delivered to our room door was wonderfully prepared and consisted of a freshly baked croissant with jam and butter as well as muesli and yogurt with seasonal fruit. Delicious and perfect for the start of the brand new day.

Dinner at an award-winning Kirkstyle Inn

The Kirkstyle Inn is an award-winning pub that has been honoured with a Certificate of Excellence from TripAdvisor since 2015 with a great atmosphere and wonderful & moody interior design. The food was delicious and just thinking about these beautifully served and extremely tasty mouth-watering dishes makes me hungry.

The menu is very diverse so everyone will find something that will satisfy their palate. From Proper Fish and Chips, West coast Scallops through The Kirkstyle Pie and Fresh Ravioli (our choice!), no one will leave the place hungry.

We were delighted with these delicious dishes and lovely customer service. you simply cannot miss this!

Things to do in and around

When you come for the weekend you will probably spend most of your free time relaxing, enjoying the atmosphere of this place and the taste of delicious dishes. You can also take a pleasant trip through the beautiful countryside and surroundings.

You can see things like The Rear of the Dupplin Cross in the St Serf’s Church, War Memorial or Village Green. The village is full of architecturally beautiful buildings such as St Andrews Metals, Village Hall and Dunning Parish Church.

It is worth mentioning that the history of people settling in Dunning and its surroundings dates back approximately five thousand years. Numerous remains and artefacts have been found on these lands, which were from the Neolithic, Bronze and Iron Ages.

Dunning also has some dark history, including the witch-hunt and the Maggie Wall’s Memorial, which recalls these dreadful events and the tragedy that dates back to 1657.

However, if you are staying longer, The Kirkstyle Inn offers a lot of possibilities. Romantics enthusiasts can enjoy wine tasting or a specially prepared picnic. If you like to stay active you can enjoy fly fishing, golf, tennis, shooting or hiking in the hills. For luxury lovers, The Kirkstyle Inn staff can arrange a bath and spa in Gleneagles. This place fulfills your dreams of a perfect holiday.

Being in Dunning and staying at The Kirkstyle Inn has filled me with positive energy. I rested and relaxed. It is a perfect spot to visit as a nonobvious experience and spend a magnificent, quality time.

I miss it already and I would love to go back there even today. I also recommend it to you, so check it yourself and fall in love as I did.
